Photographing the Lobster Claw Nebula

The Lobster Claw Nebula (Sharpless 157) is a bright emission nebula. It lies near the edge of the northern constellation Cassiopeia, bordering on Cepheus. As you’ll soon see in my long-exposure image, this bright HII region is surrounded by many more interesting deep-sky objects.

The Lobster Claw and the Bubble

There are several interesting deep-sky objects within or near the Lobster Claw Nebula. Planetary Nebula Sharpless 157a and open cluster NGC 7510 can be seen in the image when viewing the Lobster Claw Nebula up-close (see below).

Focusing and Framing the Subject

Like many other large nebulae regions, framing this target up just right can be tricky. Finding the Lobster Claw shape isn’t too difficult, but deciding where it should be placed within the frame can take some time.

Radian Raptor 61

This is one of the first photos captured through the new Radian Raptor 61 triplet apochromatic refractor. Until this image, I had used the Raptor 61 with my full-frame Canon EOS Ra and Radian Triad Ultra filter exclusively.

Final Thoughts

Although I am happy with my final image of the Lobster Claw Nebula captured from home, I would like to photograph this deep-sky object again under dark skies.

Facts, location and map

Ophiuchus is the 11th largest constellation in the sky, occupying an area of 948 square degrees. It is one of the 15 equatorial constellations. It is located in the third quadrant of the southern hemisphere (SQ3) and can be seen at latitudes between +80° and -80°.

Myth

Ophiuchus is most frequently associated with the Greek mythical figure of Asclepius, son of the god Apollo, who was said to be able to bring people back to life with his healing powers. Asclepius learned how to do this after seeing one snake bringing healing herbs to another.

Ophiuchus stars

Rasalhague (or Ras Alhague) is the brightest star in Ophiuchus. It has an apparent magnitude of 2.07 and is approximately 48.6 light years distant from Earth. It is a binary star with an orbital period of 8.62 years.

Deep sky objects in Ophiuchus

Messier 9 is a globular cluster with an apparent magnitude of 8.42. It is approximately 25,800 light years distant from Earth.

Usually, although in the main dining room in recent years I’m recalling it wasn’t a full lobster tail and often was in a "melange." ?? I remember when it was the lobster tail. In Blu, however, you can get the full lobster tail if I’m remembering correctly.

On our last 2 Celebrity cruises lobster was served the 2nd formal night in the MDR and they were serving whole lobster tails. My SO is a big lobster fan and she had 4 tails. They were actually decent sized. Of course past history cannot always be used to predict what Celebrity has planned for this season.

This what I was referring to…if your experience is red lobster, then the lobster served on celebrity is quite good. I lived in the northeast for many years…I’ve eaten at red lobster exactly once and tried some of the lobster and would never order lobster there again
